Barmouth engineering works, November 2009

During the weekend of the 21st and 22nd of November, track renewal work took place between Barmouth loop and Llanaber halt. This required four ballast trains (each of 10 autoballasters and a Seacow), and the use of one Class 37 on each, plus one on the rear of one of them to negate the need to run round. 37510 was left spare on Bescot in case of any problems, and when 37607 failed at Wellington, 37510 rescued it and took the train forward, with 607 dead in tow.

ERTMS Wheelslip Testing

On the night of 30th July 97303 undertook wheelslip testing in an engineering possession from Machynlleth to Dovey Junction to accurately gauge how much ballast was needed in the loco to prevent wheelslip. This is because the ERTMS system isn't able to tolerate it and needs accurate speed information from the axles. To do this, 97301 dragged 303 - whose cabs had been filled with containers of water as ballast - and the five MRA wagons from Machynlleth to Dovey Junction where the train reversed and 303 then returned it to Machynlleth by the driver being instructed to create as much slip as he could, and thus we were treated to the sounds of the loco being repeatedly opened up to full power rapidly, and shut down. 97301 and 97303 and the wagons were stabled at Aberystwyth for these tests as there was no room at Machynlleth due to the Standard Class 4MT, its coaches, and 33207 occupying the Tank siding. The whole ensemble turned up on Monday evening behind 66101.

TIRFP - first non-MoD traffic

Telford and Wrekin Council's recycling department arranged for their new order of kerbside recycling boxes for waste paper to be delivered by rail from ABP King George Dock, Hull, and this prevented 15 lorries from making the delivery. This was also the first non-MoD revenue-earning traffic into TIRFP.

Note: all photographs taken within TIRFP are with the kind permission and co-operation of John G Russell (Transport) staff, for which I am most grateful.

Naming of 67015 at Gobowen

On 16th May, 67015 was named "David J. Lloyd" at Gobowen station. Prior to that, a sculpture was unveiled outside the station in memory of David Lloyd, former councillor, mayor, schoolteacher, and founding chairman of the Shrewsbury to Chester Rail Users' Association, and who reopened the ticket office at Gobowen station. He sadly died in September 2006, and was a vanguard of community rail partnerships before the term became fashionable. The naming and the unveiling of the sculpture took place on the first day of ACoRP's Community Rail Weekend.
